KAMOKUTOURISHUSEI system at Tamagawa University

This is a system that allows non-Tamagawa students (excluding Tamagawa graduate students and Certificate Program students) to take courses offered by the Graduate School of Education at Tamagawa University and earn regular credits. KAMOKUTOURISHUSEI can take the five courses (10 credits) associated with the IB educator Certificate in one academic year and upon successful completion of the courses apply to the IB to obtain an IBEC in PYP, MYP or DP.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the Graduate School of Education Online IBEC program in English, applicants, must meet one of the following requirements (1) through (5).

  1. The applicant holds a bachelor’s degree from a higher education institution.
  2. The applicant has completed the equivalent of 16 years of education outside of Japan.
  3. The applicant is deemed eligible for admission by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.
  4. The applicant has enrolled in higher education institution for more than 3 years obtaining required number of credits.
  5. Tamagawa University Graduate school recognizes that the applicant has an academic ability equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.

English proficiency requirements

All courses are taught and assessed in English. The applicant needs sufficient English language proficiency to pursue academic tasks and perform assessment tasks.

Non-native English speakers will need to provide evidence of one of the following unless they completed their last degree in an English medium institution.

<Level of English Language Proficiency required>

  • For those whose first language is not English.
  • IELTS score 5.5 or above
  • TOEFL® iBT 72 or above
  • TOEIC® L&R 780 or above
  • GTEC 1190 or above
  • EIKEN pre-1 level or above
  • Interview - Applicants who do not have current testing results or are unable to access a testing center can ask to be interviewed before applying.
  • NB: Applicants with teaching experience and/or a teaching license are preferred.
  • NB: Applicants do not need to reside in Japan.
    (However, a bank account at a bank in Japan is required for payment of the application and other fees. If you have not yet opened a bank account in Japan, please do so before the start of the application process.)
  • NB: Foreign nationals who reside in Japan must have a valid residence status for the duration of their enrollment. (Since this program is offered online, Tamagawa University cannot sponsor students for student visas.)
  • NB: Applicants will require a stable internet connection and a device capable of accessing the course materials and attend online synchronous sessions. (Moodle will be used as the main learning platform.)

Mode of delivery

On-demand, mostly asynchronous with some synchronous sessions

  • Day and time of synchronous sessions are to be decided with the instructor and students.
  • Each course requires the equivalent of 1500 minutes (25 hours) of class time and 3000 minutes (50 hours) of out-of-class study (preparation, review, assignments, etc.).

  3. Preparation of documents
    • A copy of valid passport page with name and photo
    • A copy of their resident card (both sides), if the applicant is a foreign national residing in Japan
    • A certificate of (prospective) graduation/completion of a bachelor's degree.
      • Only original official documents (paper media, Japanese or English) issued by your home university are acceptable. Photocopies are not acceptable. Certificates that can be reissued (Certificate of Graduation, etc.) must be submitted. Do not submit diplomas or other certificates that cannot be reissued. If the certificate is written in a language other than Japanese or English, submit a Japanese or English translation certified by an official institution in your country (embassy or other government-related organization, university, or other educational institution) in addition to the original.
      • Documents issued by higher education institutions cannot be sent directly from the institutions. Please have them sent to applicant first. Documents must be submitted by the applicant to Tamagawa.
      • Digital certificate and documents are NOT accepted at Tamagawa University.
      • In case a certificate of (prospective) graduation/completion of a bachelor's degree cannot be obtained from your home university, an official paper-based transcript with a graduation/completion date and the name of the bachelor's degree obtained listed will be accepted.
    • Proof of English language proficiency (For those whose first language is not English.)
      • Those who have completed their last degree in an English-medium program are exempted from this requirement.
      • Original score sheets, certificates of acceptance, etc. must be submitted (photocopies are not acceptable); copies sent directly from testing organization or printed from web pages are not acceptable.
      • If you do not have English proficiency qualifications or scores, please arrange and complete an interview by Friday, January 19, 2024. Please contact us at contact point email address below by January 12, 2024 to arrange a date for an interview.
    • Curriculum Vitae or resume (in English)
      • Any format is acceptable.
      • The CV or resume should include your work history, teaching and educational background, contact information with three references, and attach a photo with a plain of the applicant.
      • Be sure to include the email addresses of three references, as we may need to contact them.
      • The applicant' photo will be used to create a student register and student ID card. (By rule, student ID cards are issued only to applicants residing in Japan.)
  4. Sending documents
    Please send the original application documents above ①③⑤and, if necessary, ② and ④ to the following address by postal mail.

    • Tamagawa University may query the information on the application form.
    • If the application is incomplete and any deficiencies are not resolved by the end of the application period, the application will be withdrawn.
    • Walk-in submission is not accepted. Please do not bring documents to campus. We only accept documents by postal mail.
  5. Bank transfer of application fee (¥ 25,000)
    Applicants who have successfully completed the application procedures will be notified by e-mail of the bank account to which the application fee is to be transferred. Payment must be made in Japanese yen under the applicant's name.

Application procedure

  1. To apply, please prepare in advance a certificate of graduation/completion, a certificate of qualification showing English proficiency, and a curriculum vitae or resume.
    • If the applicant does not have a current language proficiency certification or score, the applicant needs to request an interview by January 12, 2024(Friday). Please contact the university as early as possible to arrange an interview.
  2. Fill out the IBEC online program in English application e-form.
  3. Send hard copies of the application documents to the university by mail.
  4. Complete the bank transfer of the application fee.

  • If you do not have English proficiency qualifications or scores, please apply after you have gone through an interview.
  • Complete the application e-form, mail all application documents and pay the application fee by the date above. Original documents must be received by the office by deadline. Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted.
  • Applicants who are unable to submit a current certificate or qualification showing English language proficiency, must arrange and complete an interview with a faculty member before submitting their application.

  • Payment information will be sent via e-mail by noon on February 2, 2024 (Fri.) to those who have completed the application form and document submission without any deficiencies.
  • If a family member or acquaintance completes the bank transfer procedures on the applicant’s behalf, the applicant’s name must be included in the remitter’s information. A bank account at a bank in Japan is required for payment of the application and other fees. If you have not yet opened a bank account in Japan, please do so before the start of the application process. Remittances from banks outside Japan (overseas remittances) will not be accepted.
  • If payment is not received by the deadline (JST), the applicant will not be considered for selection and application will be withdrawn.

Screening result

Applicants will be notified of the results of the screening process via email on March 1, 2024 (Friday).

Enrollment procedure

Successful applicants will be required to complete the admission procedures (payment of enrollment and tuition) within the time frame provided by the University. Details will be sent together with the notification of screening results.

  • Applicants who do not complete the admission procedures within the designated period will not be admitted.

  • Transfer fees are at the applicant expense.
  • Successful applicants are required to transfer the money to the bank account designated by the University. Successful applicants will be notified of the bank account information and remittance method.
  • If payment is not received by the due date, the applicant will not be admitted.

Notes

  1. Enrollments may be limited due to student numbers.
  2. Experienced teachers and/or licensed teachrs may be prioritized in screening.
  3. Students are registered in the courses they choose on the application. No changes can be made in principal after the application has been submitted.
  4. Those who have submitted a certificate of prospective graduation/completion at the time of application must submit documents to prove graduation/completion at the time of admission procedures. If you are unable to submit a certificate of graduation or other documents by the start of enrollment (i.e., you cannot meet the application qualifications), you will not be admitted to the program.
  5. It is the applicant’s responsibility to confirm the arrival of physical application documents using a postal or courier service with a tracking function.If the application period is overdue or if the application is with deficiencies, the application will be considered invalid.
  6. Documents, application fee, enrollment fee and tuition will not be returned once submitted/paid. Payment of the enrollment and tuition is required to be eligible to enroll in the program.
  7. Please prepare the required fees in advance. The application fee, enrollment fee, and tuition cannot be paid in installments.
  8. If you wish to withdraw from a course/program after the screening result has been notified, please submit a withdrawal form as soon as possible. Any financial service providers fees are at the applicant’s expense.
  9. Any student who violates or acts in an inappropriate manner, in accordance with the various regulations of the University, will have his/her status revoked and will not be allowed to enroll in courses.
  10. For other matters, the Tamagawa University rules on KAMOKUTOURISHUSEI students and audit students will be applied.
  11. The university will handle any problems arising during the application process and while enrolled in the program according to provisions in Japanese law.
